The Walt Disney Company Sr Color Key Artist (PH) in San Francisco, California

Lucasfilm Animation and creators of the Emmy award winning animation series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and the highly successful animation series “Star Wars: Rebels” are looking for a versatile Sr. Color Key Artist to join their production team.

Under the artistic supervision of the Supervising Director and Art Director, CG Supervisor and Art Director, the Senior Color Key Artist will paint lighting keys using still frames from animatics as guidelines for 3D Lighters on an animated television series. Along with CG Supervisor and Art Director, the Sr Color Key Artist will give creative guidance in all Lighting, Matte Painting, and Projection reviews.

Responsibilities : Lighting Concepts/Color Keys

  • Painting 12-18 lighting concepts per episode as a guide for lighters, matte painters and FX artists

  • Collecting design, story and asset reference for paintings

  • Reviewing incoming Lighting with CG Supervisor and Art Director and providing creative guidance to other artists

  • Attend lighting concept kickoffs and review concepts in Dailies with CG Supervisor, Art Director, Supervising Director, and Episodic Directors

Matte Painting

  • Painting, modeling and compositing elements for matte and projection paintings

  • Supporting overseas matte artists with paint, models and texture

  • Reviewing incoming mattes providing creative guidance/notes and paintovers as needed

  • Collecting design, story and camera reference for projection set ups and reviewing with CG Supervisor, Art Director, and Supervising Director

  • Where appropriate carrying set designs through to matte painting or projection painting stage

  • Using Nuke and Maya, adding FX “sweeteners” to shots as requested

  • Providing FX reference art

Preferred Qualifications :

Required Skills / Competencies:

  • Proficiency in Photoshop required

  • Strong character/environments concept drawing skills a must

  • Highly proficient at rendering imaginary scenes with little or no reference

  • Experience working with high-end 3D tools desired

Preferred Skills / Competencies:

  • 3D knowledge of lighting in Maya and an understanding of Nuke compositing

Preferred Education :

  • Bachelor's degree in Illustration or equivalent experience

  • 5-6 years’ experience in feature film or television production, or equivalent experience

  • Experience or knowledge of cinematic techniques, language and shot composition desired
