The Walt Disney Company Fiber Transport Operations Manager in Bristol, Connecticut
The Fiber Transport Systems Manager is a public representative of Media Engineering and of ESPN through routine communication and coordination with other departments, fiber providers, technology vendors and affiliates. The manager is responsible for the daily readiness of ESPN’s provide fiber optic Network, ESPNet, and supporting systems. Performance must be accurate, timely, and with a professional demeanor befitting this role. The manager will be responsible for the team transporting contribution and distribution streams across ESPNet globally. This person is expected be intimately familiar with all aspects of the network, as well as being the technical leader. Lastly, the manager is required to have comprehensive knowledge of fiber optic, broadcast specific equipment and IT centric solutions.
Monitors and oversees current readiness of ESPN’s private fiber network (ESPNet) and approves preventive/corrective action as necessary to ensure the network is operationally ready.
Responsible for communication, resolution and follow-up of daily network issues with internal and external partners.
In collaboration with senior management the manager sets and directs the implementation of overall organizational goals and priorities.
Directs the ongoing development and implementation of operation policies, procedures and workflows to ensure ESPN’s technical standards are met by maintaining accurate and reliable media transport containing high quality audio, video and data streams.
Collaborates with senior management on staff hiring, performance evaluations, promotions, merit and bonus awards, personnel issues and disciplinary decisions.
Interacts regularly with management and technical staff to mentor, inspire and facilitate a work environment that encourages teamwork, open communication and a commitment to excellence.
Has shared responsibility with senior management for formulating and managing all departmental budgets.
Maintains a current and active in-depth understanding of all relevant operating systems.
May recommend annual operating and capital budget for new equipment to meet future needs.
Maintains a high level of technical proficiency.
Provides training for assigned staff as necessary to ensure high quality productions levels are achieved.
Assists in the recruiting of technical, engineering or operations personnel as needed.
Regularly interacts and maintains positive relationships with departments throughout ESPN.
Basic Qualifications :
Availability to work in a 24 x 7 environment including weekends and holidays.
2-3 years of experience managing individual contributors and developing staff.
Demonstrated experience managing complex on-air network operations, workflows and staff scheduling requirements.
Minimum 8 years of Broadcast or Fiber Optic Industry Network experience
Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
Knowledge of various fiber optic standards and transport delivery methods, including SONET, SDH, DWDM, CWDM, LAN Phy and WAN Phy technologies
Knowledge of MPEG 2 Transport stream technologies and standards.
Knowledge of MPEG and JPEG compression hardware, software, and standards
Knowledge of IP protocols such as BGP, IGMPv2 & 3, TCP/IP, SNMP, SSL, and HTTPS
Has in depth knowledge of highly complex systems for television and fiber optic signal origination and distribution.
Some travel may be required as necessary.
Ability to work within a high-pressure deadline-oriented team environment
Preferred Qualifications :
Demonstrated ability to successfully manage large technical teams through organizational and operational change
In depth knowledge of trends, technology advances, new products, and best practices in networking and broadcast operations.
Required Education :
- High School Diploma or equivalent technical school graduate
Preferred Education :
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Computer Science or a minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in broadcast or fiber optic industry technologies
