ABC Studios International, the international division of ABC Studios, a global leader in the development, production and distribution of entertainment content, is seeking a candidate for the newly-created position of Head of Business Affairs to lead the business affairs and deal-making functions of ABC Studios International. The successful candidate will have the ambition to be a key player in driving exponential growth to the division together with a demonstrated track record for excellence as a collaborative deal-maker with exceptional industry knowledge, inter-personal skills and the highest degree of integrity. The position will be based in the London offices of ABC Studios International and support the Managing Director of ABC Studios International. The role will report to the Executive-Vice President, Business Operations, of ABC Studios.
Disney ABC Television Network
The ABC Television Network is home to the Emmy-winning "Modern Family" and comedy favourite “The Middle”; reality phenomenon "Shark Tank" and long-running hit “Dancing with the Stars"; “General Hospital,” which just celebrated its 50th anniversary on the network, along with daytime talk shows “The View” and “The Chew”; and late-night talk show "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" The network also boasts some of television’s most prestigious awards shows, including The Oscars, the Country Music Awards, The American Music Awards and The Billboard Music Awards. ABC’s viewing experience is enhanced through a variety of innovative and award-winning digital entertainment platforms, including the innovative WATCH ABC app.
ABC Studios is a global leader in the development, production and distribution of entertainment content across broadcast, cable and streaming platforms. The studio is the primary content provider for ABC Entertainment, producing hit series for the network, including “American Housewife,” “black-ish,” "Grey's Anatomy," "How to Get Away with Murder," "Once Upon a Time," “Quantico” and “Scandal,” co-productions “Designated Survivor,” "Marvel's Agents of "S.H.I.E.L.D." and “Speechless,” and late night talk show “Jimmy Kimmel Live”; along with “Code Black” and "Criminal Minds" for CBS. For the 2017-18 season, ABC Studios is producing the dramas “The Crossing,” “For the People,” “The Gospel of Kevin” and a “Grey’s Anatomy” spinoff, the comedy, “The Mayor,” and co-producing the dramas “The Good Doctor” and “Marvel’s Inhumans,” and the comedy “Alex, Inc.” for ABC; as well as the comedy “College-ish” for Freeform. Under the ABC Studios umbrella is also ABC Signature, the boutique division spearheading development and production in premium, basic cable and digital platforms. ABC Signature Studios co-productions include “Marvel’s Runaways” for Hulu, "Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger” and “Marvel’s New Warriors” for Freeform, and “SMILF” for Showtime. In addition, ABC Studios International oversees global development and production.
Structure, negotiate, manage, document/coordinate documentation of all business deals in connection with ABCSI’s development and production activities, which include:
The engagement of writers, producers, actors, directors, and consultants
The option/acquisition of underlying rights
Arrangements with coproduction partners
Distribution/first look arrangements with production companies
The licensing of ABCSI content to networks and on demand platforms
Coordinate with and manage in-house and outside counsel as necessary
Maintain and expand strong working relationships with internal executives as well as externally with agencies, the creative community, broadcasters, and other licensees of ABCSI’s programming
Management of ABCSI’s development and overhead budgets
Oversee the functions of various support departments relative to ABCSI’s activities such as Contracts Administration, Casting Administration and Credits Administration
Provide support to ABC Studios and Disney Strategic Planning in the analysis and structuring of acquisition opportunities
Collaborate with Disney Media Distribution to deepen existing strategic relationships and develop new business partnerships and opportunities
The role will report to the Executive-Vice President, Business Operations, of ABC Studios based in the US and support the Managing Director of ABC Studios International.
Basic Qualifications :
Juris Doctor or equivalent legal degree
Minimum of 10 years’ experience with a track record of excellence as a business affairs executive with a major US television studio, UK production company, US national television network or OTT platform, UK national television network or OTT platform, or equivalent law firm experience
Expertise in all aspects of international development, production and distribution
Expertise in applicable guild requirements
Must possess an ability to work independently within a team-oriented environment and have a commitment to learning and excellence.
Superior analytical and writing skills and ability, together with strong business and financial acumen.
Exceptional organizational, prioritization and time management skills with the ability to execute against multiple high-priority projects, with a keen attention to detail.
Exceptional inter-personal communication skills.
Demonstrated track record of holding to the highest degree of honesty and integrity.
